If you go downtown to inspect the new Plaza Saturday (7pm) or Sunday (9pm), stop by the RPL theatre and see Bill Cunningham New York. This fun documentary is about New York Times street fashion photographer Bill Cunningham. Still going strong well into his 80s, Cunningham continues to document the changing trends of the Big Apple, a job he’s done for more than 30 years.
I saw the film on Thursday and found it to be pretty good. The discussion of New York and Paris as places of fashion trend setting and a nexus of larger-than-life personalities is quite interesting. There was a subplot on artist housing that might be familiar to some. And, there was some general thoughts on urban cycling and the importance of fine arts/culture in society.
If you like meditations on the art’s role in making great cities, you should see Bill Cunningham New York.
